• Explore the functions of communities as part of “the range of social systems in which people live.”

• Identify the primary concepts involved in conceptual frameworks concerning community functions.

• “Apply knowledge to understand person and environment” by assessing the similarities and differences among community functions.

Week 10: Describing Membership in Nongeographical Communities


Objectives

    • Critique and apply knowledge to understand person and environment by exploring the meaning of nongeographical community.

    • Examine the nongeographical communities to which belong.

    • Assess the strengths and weaknesses of membership in nongeographical communities.


Instructions

  • Review the content on nongeographical communities.

  • Identify at least one nongeographical community to which you or someone you know well belongs to (e.g. professional, spiritual, ethnic, racial, sexual orientation, etc.).

  • Based on the nongeographical community you identified, address the following questions below.

  • Provide identifying information about the nongeographical community you are discussing (i.e. name of it, what kind of community is this, what is its purpose, etc.).

  • Briefly discuss why you believe this community meets the qualifications for being a nongeographical community as opposed to a geographical community?

Week 10: Geographic Communities


For this week’s discussion, you will consider your geographic community of origin.  Thinking about your origin community, address the following questions:

 

a.  What is your community’s population size?  On what are you are basing this information?

 

b.  What is your community’s population density?  How do you know this to be accurate?

 

c.  How heterogeneous is the community with respect to residents’ socioeconomic status, racial/ethnic background, and age range?

 

d.  Is your origin community an urban community (metropolitan or micropolitan) or a smaller community (a small city, a small town, a bedroom community, an institutional community, a reservation community, or a rural community)?

 

e.  How would you describe this community in terms of its basic characteristics (e.g., comfortable, crowded, sparsely populated, middle-class, poor)?

 

f.  Based on your earliest memory of your origin community, in what ways has it changed or stayed the same today?

In chapter 11, we discuss neighborhoods, ethnicity, and social class, including the strengths of ethnic and cultural solidarity, and segregation. Please answer the questions to the discussion board after reading the chapter.

What are your beliefs about neighborhood segregation and why it exists? What do you think are the advantages and disadvantages of neighborhood segregation? What evidence or supporting information can you provide that substantiates your beliefs? Do you think more should be done to promote integrated neighborhoods?

Geographic Overview

Area 3 is in zip code 77004, according to the United States zip codes website. This area is claimed to be occupied by predominantly African American young adults in their late twenties to early forties. This sector, which is small in comparison to other parts of the city, has a small number of families and is largely occupied by single adults.

Interview Recap

The interviews were done with a resident who has lived in the region for three years, a substitute teacher who has worked in the area for five years, and a nurse practitioner who has worked in her practice for two years. Mrs. Yusuf has been working as a nurse practitioner in the community for the past two years. Her practice benefits the community by providing services to low-income individuals as well as minority groups that are both underinsured and uninsured. After speaking with Mrs. Yusuf, it is clear that she believes the community’s weakness is occupational stress, but that the community’s engagement in dealing with power imbalances is a source of strength. Mrs. Yusuf believes that as a result of the COVID challenges, a Medicare-like healthcare system will and should emerge, allowing uninsured people to seek and receive medical care more readily, culminating in a future community transformation.

Another interviewee is a three-year resident of the neighborhood who spends her free time delivering meals to the city’s homeless population. Ms. Jones grew up not far from her current residency and sees the community’s unity as a strength; yet, she sees the community’s weakness as the lack of funds available to help the homeless. She believes that a future transition for the community will be more unity in the majority of areas afflicted by homelessness. She also feels that if the community comes together, it will be able to form a partnership and approach the local government for support for the homeless.

The third interviewee is Ms. Martin, who has been a substitute teacher at the local schools for the past five years. Her hope for the future of the community is centered on the activities for school-aged youth. Ms. Martin believes that if school-based programs to empower children and encourage them to be positive members of society are sustained, the community will quickly change for the better. Ms. Martin is involved in the neighborhood through her church’s youth outreach program, and she sees the community’s new housing construction as a strength. She claims that a major problem is the lack of after-school programs and community resources.
